Evening Supplications

Nightfall is the hour of taking account of the day and of asking that the night pass in safety. This page gathers thirty-one prayers traditionally recited in the evening, each with its original Arabic text and its meaning in English. You will find the plea for the heart to remain steadfast, the remembrances recited after the sunset prayer, the prayers of refuge read for protection through the night, and the words of trust spoken on lying down to sleep. 1. اَللّٰهُمَّ يَا مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوبِ، ثَـبِّتْ قُلُوبَنَا عَلَى دِيـنِكَ ۝ أَعُوذُ بِاللّٰهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ، بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ (١٠) ۝

   O Turner of Hearts, keep our hearts firm upon Your religion. I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan. In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. (10 times)

2. أَمْسَيْـنَا وَأَمْسَى الْمُلْكُ لِلّٰهِ، لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ وَإِلَيْهِ الْمَصِيرُ ۝ أَمْسَيْنَا وَأَمْسَى الْمُلْكُ لِلّٰهِ، أَعُوذُ بِاللّٰهِ الَّذِي يُمْسِكُ السَّمَاءَ أَنْ تَقَعَ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ إِلَّا بِـإِذْنِه۪ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ وَذَرَأَ وَبَرَأَ ۝

   We have reached the evening and all dominion belongs to Allah alone. He has no partner. There is no god but Him, and to Him is the return. We have reached the evening and all dominion belongs to Allah. I seek refuge in Allah — Who holds the sky from falling upon the earth except by His permission — from the evil of all that He has created, scattered and brought forth.

3. اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ صِحَّةً فِي إِيمَانٍ، وَإِيمَانًا فِي حُسْنِ خُلُقٍ، وَنَجَاحًا يَـتْـبَعُهُ فَلَاحٌ، وَرَحْمَةً مِنْكَ وَعَافِـيَـةً، وَمَغْفِرَةً مِنْكَ وَرِضْوَانًا ۝

   O Allah, I ask You for soundness in faith, faith accompanied by good character, success followed by prosperity, mercy and well-being from You, and forgiveness and Your pleasure.

4. اَللّٰهُمَّ فَاطِرَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ، عَالِمَ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ، رَبَّ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَمَلِيكَهُ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ نَفْسِي وَشَرِّ الشَّيْطَانِ وَشَرَكِه۪، وَأَنْ أَقْـتَرِفَ عَلَى نَفْسِي سُوءً أَوْ أَنْ أَجُرَّهُ عَلَى مُسْلِمٍ (٣) ۝

   O Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the seen, Lord and Sovereign of all things, I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek refuge in You from the evil of my own soul, the evil of Satan and his traps, and from committing wrong against my own soul or bringing harm upon a Muslim. (3 times)

5. اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَمْسَيْتُ أُشْهِدُكَ، وَأُشْهِدُ حَمَلَةَ عَرْشِكَ وَمَلَائِكَتَكَ وَجَمِيعَ خَلْقِكَ، بِأَنَّـكَ أَنْتَ اللّٰهُ الَّذِي لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ وَحْدَكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ، وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُكَ وَرَسُولُكَ (٣) ۝

   O Allah, I have reached the evening calling You to witness, calling the bearers of Your Throne, Your angels, and all of Your creation to witness, that You are Allah, there is no god but You alone, You have no partner, and that Muhammad is Your servant and Your Messenger. (3 times)

6. اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْـأَلُكَ الْعَافِـيَـةَ فِي الدُّنْـيَا وَالْأٰخِـرَةِ ۝

   O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and in the Hereafter.

7. اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَفْوَ وَالْعَافِـيَـةَ فِي دِيـنِي وَدُنْـيَايَ وَأَهْلِي وَمَالِي ۝

   O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family and my wealth.

8. اَللّٰهُمَّ اسْتُرْ عَوْرَاتِي، وَأٰمِنْ رَوْعَاتِي ۝

   O Allah, conceal my faults and grant me security from my fears.

9. اَللّٰهُمَّ احْفَظْنِي مِنْ بَـيْنِ يَدَيَّ، وَمِنْ خَلْفِي، وَعَنْ يَمِيـنِي، وَعَنْ شِمَالِي، وَمِنْ فَوْقِي، وَأَعُوذُ بِعَظَمَتِكَ أَنْ أُغْـتَالَ مِنْ تَحْتِي ۝

   O Allah, protect me from in front of me, from behind me, from my right, from my left, and from above me; and I seek refuge in Your Greatness from being seized from beneath me.

10. رَضِينَا بِاللّٰهِ رَبًّا، وَبِالْإِسْلَامِ دِينًا، وَبِمُحَمَّدٍ رَسُولًا؛ رَضِيتُ بِاللّٰهِ رَبًّا، وَبِالْإِسْلَامِ دِينًا، وَبِمُحَمَّدٍ نَـبِـيًّا (٣) ۝

    We are pleased with Allah as our Lord, with Islam as our religion, and with Muhammad as our Messenger. I am pleased with Allah as my Lord, with Islam as my religion, and with Muhammad as my Prophet. (3 times)

11. اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكُفْرِ وَالْفَقْرِ، اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ، لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ (٣) ۝

    O Allah, I seek refuge in You from disbelief and poverty. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave. There is no god but You. (3 times)

12. اَللّٰهُمَّ عَافِنِي فِي بَدَنِي، اَللّٰهُمَّ عَافِنِي فِي سَمْعِي، اَللّٰهُمَّ عَافِنِي فِي بَصَرِي، لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ (٣) ۝

    O Allah, grant well-being to my body. O Allah, grant well-being to my hearing. O Allah, grant well-being to my sight. There is no god but You. (3 times)

13. سُبْحَانَ اللّٰهِ وَبِحَمْدِه۪، لَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللّٰهِ، مَا شَاءَ اللّٰهُ كَانَ وَمَا لَمْ يَشَأْ لَمْ يَكُنْ، أَعْلَمُ أَنَّ اللّٰهَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ، وَأَنَّ اللّٰهَ قَدْ أَحَاطَ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عِلْمًا۝

    Glory be to Allah and by His praise. There is no power except with Allah. What Allah wills comes to pass and what He does not will does not come to pass. I know that Allah has power over all things and that Allah has encompassed all things in His knowledge.

14. أَمْسَيْنَا عَلَى فِطْرَةِ الْإِسْلَامِ، وَكَلِمَةِ الْإِخْلَاصِ، وَعَلَى دِينِ نَبِيِّنَا مُحَمَّدٍ ، وَعَلَى مِلَّةِ أَبِينَا إِبْرَاهِيمَ حَنِيفًا مُسْلِمًا وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ ۝

    We have reached the evening upon the natural disposition of Islam, the word of sincerity, the religion of our Prophet Muhammad, and the community of our father Ibrahim who was upright and submissive to Allah and was not among the polytheists.

15. يَا حَيُّ يَا قَـيُّومُ، بِرَحْمَتِكَ أَسْتَغِيثُ، أَصْلِحْ لِي شَأْنِي كُلَّهُ، وَلَا تَـكِلْنِي إِلَى نَفْسِي طَرْفَةَ عَيْنٍ ۝

    O Ever-Living, O Self-Sustaining! I seek help through Your mercy; set all my affairs right for me and do not leave me to myself even for the blink of an eye.

16. اَللّٰهُمَّ أَنْتَ أَحَقُّ مَنْ ذُكِرَ، وَأَحَقُّ مَنْ عُبِدَ، وَأَنْصَرُ مَنِ ابْـتُـغِـيَ، وَأَرْأَفُ مَنْ مَلَكَ، وَأَجْوَدُ مَنْ سُئِلَ، وَأَوْسَعُ مَنْ أَعْطَى؛ أَنْتَ الْمَلِكُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ، وَالْفَرْدُ لَا نِدَّ لَكَ، كُلُّ شَيْءٍ هَالِكٌ إِلَّا وَجْهَكَ، لَنْ تُطَاعَ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِكَ، وَلَنْ تُعْصَى إِلَّا بِعِلْمِكَ، تُطَاعُ فَـتَشْكُرُ، وَتُعْصَى فَـتَغْفِرُ، أَقْـرَبُ شَهِيدٍ، وَأَدْنَى حَفِيظٍ، حُلْتَ دُونَ النُّـفُوسِ، وَأَخَذْتَ بِالنَّوَاصِي، وَكَـتَـبْتَ الْأٰثَارَ، وَنَسَخْتَ الْأٰجَالَ؛ اَلْقُلُوبُ لَكَ مُفْضِيَةٌ، وَالسِّرُّ عِنْدَكَ عَلَانِـيَةٌ؛ اَلْحَلَالُ مَا أَحْلَلْتَ، وَالْحَرَامُ مَا حَرَّمْتَ، وَالدِّينُ مَا شَرَعْتَ، وَالْأَمْرُ مَا قَضَيْتَ؛ اَلْخَلْقُ خَلْقُكَ، وَالْعَبْدُ عَبْدُكَ، وَأَنْتَ اللّٰهُ الرَّؤُوفُ الرَّحِيمُ؛ أَسْأَلُكَ بِنُورِ وَجْهِكَ الَّذِي أَشْرَقَتْ لَهُ السَّمَاوَاتُ وَالْأَرْضُ، وَبِكُلِّ حَقٍّ هُوَ لَكَ، وَبِحَقِّ السَّائِلِينَ عَلَيْكَ، أَنْ تُقِيلَنِي فِي هٰذِهِ الْغَدَاةِ وَفِي هٰذِهِ الْعَشِيَّةِ، وَأَنْ تُجِيرَنِي مِنَ النَّارِ بِقُدْرَتِكَ ۝

    O Allah, You are the most worthy of being mentioned, most worthy of being worshipped, most helpful of those sought, most compassionate of those who possess power, most generous of those who are asked, most giving of those who give. You are the King with no partner, the One with no equal. Everything perishes except Your Face. You are not obeyed except by Your permission, nor disobeyed except within Your knowledge. When obeyed You show gratitude, when disobeyed You forgive. You are the nearest witness and the closest guardian. You stand between souls and their desires, You hold all forelocks, You have recorded all deeds and ordained all lifespans. Hearts open up to You and secrets are manifest before You. The lawful is what You permit and the unlawful is what You forbid. The religion is what You have prescribed and the command is what You have decreed. The creation is Your creation and the servant is Your servant. You are Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful. I ask You by the light of Your Face that illumined the heavens and the earth, by every right that is Yours and by the right of those who ask of You, that You protect me this morning and this evening, and that You save me from the Fire by Your power.

17. حَسْبِيَ اللّٰهُ۬ لَۤا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَۘ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ وَهُوَ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ (٧) ۝

    Allah is sufficient for me; there is no god but Him. Upon Him I rely and He is the Lord of the Great Throne. (7 times)

18. اَللّٰهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي، لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ خَلَقْتَنِي، وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ، وَأَنَا عَلَى عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ، أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا صَنَعْتُ، أَبُوءُ لَكَ بِـنِعْمَتِكَ عَلَيَّ، وَأَبُوءُ لَكَ بِذَنْبِي، فَاغْفِرْ لِي، فَإِنَّـهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ ۝

    O Allah, You are my Lord; there is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant, and I uphold Your covenant and Your promise to the best of my ability. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your blessings upon me and I acknowledge my sins, so forgive me, for truly none forgives sins except You.

19. لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَاللّٰهُ أَكْـبَرُ، لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَحْدَهُ، لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ، لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللّٰهِ ۝

    There is no god but Allah and Allah is the Greatest. There is no god but Allah alone. There is no god but Allah, He has no partner. There is no god but Allah; His is the dominion and His is all praise. There is no god but Allah and there is no might nor power except with Allah.

20. بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الَّذِي لَا يَضُرُّ مَعَ اسْمِه۪ شَيْءٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِي السَّمَاءِ، وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ (٣) ۝

    In the name of Allah with Whose name nothing on earth nor in heaven can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. (3 times)

21. أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللّٰهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ (٣) ۝

    I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created. (3 times)

22. فَسُبْحَانَ اللّٰهِ حِينَ تُمْسُونَ وَحِينَ تُصْبِحُونَ ۝ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ فِي السَّمٰوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَعَشِيًّا وَحِينَ تُظْهِرُونَ ۝ يُخْرِجُ الْحَيَّ مِنَ الْمَيِّتِ وَيُخْرِجُ الْمَيِّتَ مِنَ الْحَيِّ وَيُحْيِي الْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَاۘ وَكَذٰلِكَ تُخْرَجُونَ۝

    So glory be to Allah when you reach the evening and when you reach the morning. And to Him belongs all praise in the heavens and earth, and in the late afternoon and when you reach midday. He brings forth the living from the dead and brings forth the dead from the living, and He revives the earth after its death. And thus shall you be brought forth. (Quran 30:17-19)

23. أَمْسَيْنَا وَأَمْسَى الْمُلْكُ لِلّٰهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَحْدَهُ، لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ، وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ ۝

    We have reached the evening and all dominion belongs to Allah, and all praise is for Allah. There is no god but Allah alone, He has no partner; to Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise, and He has power over all things.

24. رَبِّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَ مَا فِي هٰذِهِ اللَّيْلَةِ وَخَيْرَ مَا بَعْدَهَا، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا فِي هٰذِهِ اللَّيْلَةِ وَشَرِّ مَا بَعْدَهَا ۝

    My Lord, I ask You for the good of this night and the good of what comes after it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this night and the evil of what comes after it.

25. رَبِّ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكَسَلِ وَسُوءِ الْكِبَرِ، رَبِّ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابٍ فِي النَّارِ وَعَذَابٍ فِي الْقَبْرِ ۝

    My Lord, I seek refuge in You from laziness and the miseries of old age. My Lord, I seek refuge in You from punishment in the Fire and punishment in the grave.

26. اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكَسَلِ وَالْهَرَمِ وَسُوءِ الْكِبَرِ وَفِـتْـنَـةِ الدُّنْـيَا وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ ۝ أَمْسَيْنَا وَأَمْسَى الْمُلْكُ لِلّٰهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ ۝

    O Allah, I seek refuge in You from laziness, senility, the miseries of old age, the tribulation of the world, and the punishment of the Hereafter. We and all dominion have reached the evening belonging to Allah, Lord of the worlds.

27. اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَ هٰذِهِ اللَّيْلَةِ، وَفَتْحَهَا وَنَصْرَهَا وَنُورَهَا وَبَرَكَتَهَا وَهُدَاهَا، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا فِيهَا وَشَرِّ مَا بَعْدَهَا ۝

    O Allah, I ask You for the good of this night, its opening, its victory, its light, its blessing and its guidance; and I seek refuge in You from the evil of what is in it and the evil of what comes after it.

28. اَللّٰهُمَّ حَـبِّبْ إِلَيْنَا الْإِيمَانَ وَزَيِّـنْـهُ فِي قُلُوبِنَا، وَكَرِّهْ إِلَـيْـنَا الْكُفْرَ وَالْفُسُوقَ وَالْعِصْيَانَ، وَاجْعَلْنَا مِنَ الرَّاشِدِينَ ۝

    O Allah, make faith beloved to us and beautify it in our hearts, and make disbelief, wickedness and disobedience hateful to us, and make us among the rightly guided.

29. اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّـي أَسْأَلُكَ نَـفْـسًا بِكَ مُطْمَـئِـنَّـةً، تُـؤْمِنُ بِلِقَائِكَ، وَتَرْضَى بِقَضَائِكَ، وَتَـقْـنَعُ بِعَطَائِكَ ۝

    O Allah, I ask You for a soul that is tranquil with You, believes in meeting You, is content with Your decree, and satisfied with what You have given.

30. اَللّٰهُمَّ أَحْسِنْ عَاقِـبَـتَـنَا فِي الْأُمُورِ كُلِّهَا، وَأَجِرْنَا مِنْ خِزْيِ الدُّنْيَا وَعَذَابِ الْأٰخِرَةِ ۝

    O Allah, make our ending in all matters good, and save us from the humiliation of this world and the punishment of the Hereafter.

31. وَصَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى أٰلِه۪ وَأَصْحَابِه۪ أَجْمَعِينَ، أٰمِينَ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ ۝

    May Allah send His blessings upon our master Muhammad, and upon all of his family and companions. Ameen. And all praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
